Cali*Lax All Stars 2010

Postby picknroll » Tue Jun 22, 2010 9:57 am

The Cali*Lax All Stars are a box lacrosse travel team program put together by Shaydon Santos. This summer Shaydon has five travel teams going to Canada. That's hugely impressive. I just received this info from the program and I'm passing it on. Yet another venue for our Nor Cal boys to continue to improve! It would be great if we had someone involved in this program to report out on these Canadian tournaments.

----

These players represent the Bay Area's top lacrosse talent. They WEAR THE BEAR with PRIDE and are the first generation of 'real' youth American Box Lacrosse players. This summer, these players will take their game on the road and travel to Calgary's Canada Day Tournament. Our Bantam 'A' team will also travel to Whitby, Ontario and play in the Canadian National Box Lacrosse Championships at the Lacrosse Festival - the World's Largest Lacrosse Tournament. Good Luck Boys - it's time to REPRESENT!

I ran into Shaydon last night and he was very positive on the Cali*Lax All Star trip to Canada a couple of weeks ago. Last year he took two teams up to play "B" level in a tournament. This year he took 5 teams, including two teams playing "A" level. Apparently it's a big jump from "B" to "A" up there so that's a big step for our Nor Cal boys. After a couple of games the Nor Cal boys settled in and played very compettively. He's taking two "A" level teams back up in a couple of weeks for a huge tournament with 70+ teams. That's another big step for our Nor Cal guys.

Shaydon says our field-trained boys match up really well athletically with the Canadians and do really well in transition. The area that he continues to work on is settled 5v5 where those kids with amazing stick skills play in tight spaces. It sounds like Shaydon has a great summer practice program going. With one tourney under their belt already and lots of practice I bet this next Canada trip will be even better for Cali*Lax.

There's lots of exciting lacrosse things happening this summer and the Cali*Lax team is certainly one of them. Shaydon has a passion for his box lacrosse game that is infectious. Getting our young guys up to Canada to batlle it out with the best up there is yet another way for Nor Cal lacrosse to improve. It's really exciting times.

I would love to hear some reports from players and parents that make this next trip. Please post about your experiences. We're rooting for you!

The video link is great and it sounds like the 'California kids' had a great experience going up north to play. No matter what teams record was, I'm sure the boys came home with an incredible experience and had a great time along the way. As a coach, I have seen what playing indoor does to improve the stick skills and overall game awareness in young players. Those impoved skills translate very well into improving the boys field game. For those young players that have never played indoor, you are missing the boat. For us 'old farts', I use the analogy of indoor is like putting an LP on the turn table at 78 rpm. Of course, most kids these days have no idea what I'm talking about when I say that. So my more updated analogy is saying indoor is like field lacrosse after 3 RedBulls. After a season of box, the field game slows down and players can see and understand things much better. Thanks Shaydon for making this experience available to the California kids.

Laxin, that was a great way to say it and I understood both analogies perfectly.

Great video link and terrific commentary by Shaydon. I learned more in that 15 minutes about box lacrosse than in all of the time Conan's played in other indoor leagues. Fun to see the U.S. kids on the road in Canada, too.
A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds.

Last post went in early...

These Cali*Lax leagues are way different from playing field lacrosse indoors. Its unbelievable how the kids' skills progress when legal defensive holds eliminate isos. I'm seeing 2nd, 3rd, even 4th passes out of 11 & 12 year olds. Watching the "California Cradle" turn into an over-the-shoulder settling of the ball into a useful throwing or shooting position. Seeing accurate shots on a 4" opening rather than just max-effort heaves at a 6' goal. Watching kids react to pressure not by turning away but by seeing the open man.

I've been helping with the U13's all fall and I'm completely sold on Shaydon's & Tim's program. Add in free coaching from the likes of Zach Heffman (Virginia, SJ Stealth) and its unbeatable.

Game on, eh.
