U15A - So Marin 8 Diablo 7

Postby picknroll » Sun May 23, 2010 10:41 pm

So Marin over Diablo 8-7 in an epic U15A battle.

Here's a game report from a fan in attendance:

Diablo Scorpions vs. So Marin Wolfpack
U15A Gold Medal game report

With a 5PM start, the wind had picked up to become a stiff breeze compared to the gold medal games earlier in the day. 52 degrees and chilly. Grass was hard and slippery.

So Marin scored the first goal in the first minute. Nick Watkins comes around the crease to bury a shot on an assist from Dexter Eichorst.

No more scoring as teams trade possessions for the next 5 minutes until So Marin goes up 2-0 on Dexter’s first unassisted goal of the day.

Diablo goes man-up for the first of its 10 times in the game (including a 2- and a 3-man-up). So Marin would be flagged 13 times to Diablo's 3 penalties.

Steven Wilm from Shore puts the Scorps on the board on man-up. Diablo would get 3 of their first 4 goals on man-up.

Once again, Dexter responds, unassisted. On that play he gets checked so hard on the forearm he has no movement below his left elbow, but no flag.

Dexter sits out the entire second quarter and most of the third. So Marin plays this key stretch even, without the player who had scored or assisted on their first 3 goals.

Steven Wilm plays an absolutely spectacular game for Diablo, the best individual offensive performance I’ve witnessed. He scored (4) or assisted (3) on all 7 Scorpion goals.

So Marin defense buckles down including an epic 3 man-down stand keeping Diablo off the board. 1st half ends with So Marin up 4-3 but Dexter’s forearm is so swollen it looks like it might be broken.

Diablo ties it up with a quick goal to start the second half, Shore from Wilm. 6 out the 7 Diablo goals would come off assists.

So Marin gets another unassisted goal from Kevin Leake (his second) with a dodge from the left wing when his team really needed offense.

Dexter tells his coaches midway through the 3rd that he wants to try to go, and after speaking to his parents, the coaches send him back in. He returns late in the third, makes a beautiful pass to a cutting Joe Lang and So Marin takes a 6-4 lead into the fourth period. Dexter would play the rest of the game with only one good arm. No face-offs. Joe Lang and Charlie Ryder step up to take his spot at the face.

Diablo scores on the first possession of the fourth, Tagliaferri from Wilm, for Tags’ second goal of the day. 6-5 So Marin and almost the entire 4th period still to be played.

Dexter gets his third assist of the day midway through the 4th, again to Nick Watkins. Joe Lang adds an unassisted goal with 3:50 to go in the game for a seemingly insurmountable 8-5 lead for So Marin.

But Diablo is too well coached to give up. After a time-out, Diablo scores twice in 13 seconds making it a one goal game with 3 minutes to play.

So Marin is called for 3 more penalties in the final 3 minutes but Cyrus Scott makes the stops he has to, and the underrated but statistically (average goals against per game) best defense in the U15A’s seals the victory with a two-man down down stop, forced turnovers and key ground balls.

The game ends with a ground ball in the So Marin defensive end and a scoop by a first year D middie who runs to daylight and to the gold medal.

Great game. This group of 8th graders has been battling for years, but this year with this excellent coaching staff, Diablo has taken its rightful place among the region’s best. They had as many shots hit the pipes as go in, and one bounce in a different direction and this game has a very different outcome.

Great day for this So Marin team that has been mostly together since 4th grade. Playing together all those years helped them have confidence in each other against the elite teams.

Great day for youth lacrosse. The players on both these teams, along with many others in this class throughout the NCJLA, are poised to take high school lacrosse to a new level all around the Bay Area.

Congratulations to the Crusaders and Andreas! Is that the first A level medal for a Crusaders team? Big accomplishment if so.

2010 Champions

Postby picknroll » Mon May 24, 2010 12:37 pm

Here's a summary of the 2010 champions ...

U15A - So Marin over Diablo 8-7
U13A - Pleasanton over Novato 7-6
U11A - Ross Valley over So Marin 8-5
U15B1 - Monterey over Fair Oaks 10-5
U13B1 - Diablo over Pleasanton 7-6

Note that the five championships were won by five different clubs. Not a single club took more than one championship.

Also note the scores in the championship games. These are all nail biters. Allmost all of these games could have gone either way.

Two champs from the North (So Marin and Ross Valley), two champs from the East (Pleasanton and Diablo), and one champ from the South (Monterey).

I've been saying for a while that there's lots of good lacrosse being played in a lot of places. Saturday's championship games sure proved that out. It's a great time for youth lacrosse in Nor Cal. This high level of competition is only going to drive the quality of play even higher.

Lastly, I ran into a long-time coaching friend at Treasure Island on Sunday who said that he was just stunned by the high skill level in the U11A championship game. This observer was a high-level coach with no ties to either program in that U11A game, so a truly unbiased opinion. Unfortunately I didn't get to see that game, but those type of comments bode well for our future. The skills just keep getting better at younger and younger ages.

Has there ever been a more consistently successful Coach and Team than Mike Mindel and this Southern Marin group that just won gold at U15A?

They won the 5A Gold...

They won the 6A Gold...

They got split up when we went to U15, U13

They reunited and won U15A Gold...

A terrific group of boys coached by a consistenly dedicated staff...and led by a real class act...Mike Mindel...

What an achievement...

Congratulations to them and to all of us on the completion of another successful season!!!
