Head Varsity Lacrosse Coach

Position Description: HW is looking for a dedicated coach with a strong background in coaching and teaching lacrosse at a high level and ready to take this program to the next level. Harvard-Westlake plays in one of the most competitive conferences in Southern California (Southern Section CIF Mission League) and has strong parent support and an established booster club. Coach's salary is competitive with other coaches in the area. Middle school feeder program is in the 2nd year of existence and is producing great young talent with an undefeated record. Coach would assume responsibility of the program as of June 1, 2010. Salary: Competitive. Appointment: Part-Time
Description of Head Coach Duties and Responsibilities and Tasks:
• The head coach is responsible for all facets of the boy’s lacrosse program – 7th & 8th grade, Junior Varsity and Varsity.
• Coach High School Varsity boy’s lacrosse.
• Conduct program in alignment with HW polices and guidelines.
• Hires the head and assistant coaches for all lacrosse teams.
• Supervise assistant coaches and auxiliary personnel (volunteer coaches, managers, etc.).
• Interfaces with the School, reporting to the Athletic Director.
• Lead motivator for each team, especially the Varsity, in a constructive, positive manner. Leads each training session, leads each Varsity practice by developing and following a written practice plan.
• Counsel, mentor, and advise team members.
• Encourage and promote excellence in academics from team members.
• Gives pre-game, half-time and post-game analysis.
• Supports athletes and their interest in playing lacrosse in college.
• Provides recommendation letters in a timely manner to college recruiting summer camps for interested athletes
• Communicates overall team strategy and policies to parents.
• Leads Team Party (at the beginning of the season) and Yearend Banquet.
• Networks with other coaches from other schools, including college coaches.
• Develops team practice and game schedule in accordance with the School Calendar, and communicates this information well in advance of the season to players and parents.
• Attends end of year League Awards meeting to campaign for awards for School players.
• Engage in public relations activities and promote the Lacrosse program.
• Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Bachelor’s degree required; master’s preferred. Head Varsity Lacrosse coaching experience preferred. Prior experience with winning programs, either as player or coach, preferred. Demonstrated ability to teach the game at the highest level to all players new and experienced. Experience with mentoring and advising players in a positive and effective manner, essential. Past experience and success in outlining and implementing programs for achieved academic and athletic success. Reporting: Reports to the Director of Athletics.

Harvard-Westlake School has nurtured a tradition of excellence in boys lacrosse, participating in the competitive Mission League of the CIF Southern Section at both varsity and junior varsity levels and recently created a 7th and 8th grade program that participates in the Delphic League. The Varsity team has accumulated a 53-43 record since inclusion in the CIF in 2005, making the playoffs the past two years. In this time, the program has claimed 11 first team All-Mission League Players and one Mission League MVP and one All-American.

HW Lax graduates have been recruited to continue to play at the Division III collegiate lacrosse level, with players at Bowdoin, Hamilton College and the Savannah School of Art and Design as well as several MCLA college lacrosse programs including University of California Santa Barbara, University of Southern California and University of California Los Angeles.
