Interesting to see all the Travel Teams go to a Grade Based instead of the Age Based like in the past.

I noticed All West is going Grade Based as well.

I came across a new travel team and one that has been around a while (510):

Bay Elite

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/bayelitelacrosse

(ADDED 9/30/11)
925 Lacrosse ---- Came across this one today and is apparently associated with Bay Elite and partners with the Raptors club.

510 Elite

With all these new traveling teams from youth to HS levels this should noticeably improve (hopefully) overall player and coaching talent levels in the Bay Area. I like that more travel teams are out there because it gives parents and players more choices. Competition for the best players should drive the travel teams to provide better services and coaching. All around competition between the travel teams can only improve Nor Cal lacrosse.

Norcal Braves: A very good HS travel team with a great coach overseeing it. Has helped produce some great talent out of the Bay area and Nor Cal in general. Players like Mike Hernandez from Piedmont HS (Michigan commit, 2012 class) and Mikie Schlosser from Davis HS (Michigan commit, 2013 class) have played for the Braves.

I saw this article awhile back but came across it again just now. Not sure everyone knows this but Caligold and Be the Best camps have been sold to 3dlacrosse. Add another player to the travel team business, and a big one at that. It is great that more travel teams, clinics, and pros are coming to Norcal to expand their business and grow lacrosse. I look forward to seeing how 3dlacrosse runs their business and travel teams. More competition the better but I believe the current talent pool cannot support all these travel teams, which is about 10 or 12 by my rough count. Hopefully we will see the overall talent level improve and increase, especially in areas where it is just starting to grow and improve. Those areas need more exposure to better lacrosse players, coaching and level of play. Maybe all these travel teams will help assist in the development.

I am hoping all these travel teams and pros "fighting" for players and clients will improve the quality and services they are offering. As natural compeition develops, "weaker" travel teams/pros that don't provide good or worthwhile services will drop out and the better teams and pros will be left.

The travel team business is relatively new to Norcal, at least to the masses. Some folks say they are too expensive. Maybe that is true, but it is really what you want to get out of it. I urge all parents looking into travel teams, clinics and personal coaching to do their homework and try to find out as much as possible about what they are getting into. Word of mouth travels fast and all a parent has to do is ask other parents watching their kids play which travel teams, clinics and pros are the best to send their kids to.

Just some more information about 3D and Caligold. The most interesting part I found was the plan for a big Norcal tournament like the Denver Shootout. The more local tournaments the better, like the King Showcase in SF last week - which was great I might add. Some parents around here feel we don't necessarily need to travel far and away to play good competition. Lots of great talent in our own backyards in the South Bay, East Bay, North Bay, SF and Sacramento areas. Practicing for and playing in these local tournaments, I believe, will significantly grow lacrosse for Norcal. I am not knocking all the great travel teams we have in the area because they provide great value and needed services - recruiting, exposure, training, elite play, etc. - but I honestly would rather put more time and money into buying bounce backs, cages and cases of balls for the kids than into plane tickets and hotel bills. You get better by practicing, practicing, practicing -- plain and simple.

And lastly, pro lax player John Christmas has recently moved to San Francisco and has set up shop. I know he is doing personal lessons and clinics but I wonder if he is setting up for future travel teams. I believe he coaches The Dukes, who are very talented and top ranked.

Jon Christmas is coaching at SHP in the spring and in the summer he coaches the NorCal Braves, and doing a great job at both programs.
