2011 Adrenaline Challenge

Postby Billax » Tue Jan 04, 2011 6:27 pm

Tournament begins Saturday! The Adrenaline Challenge marks the beginning of the California Lacrosse Season for me.
New venue this year: The Polo Fields in Del Mar
Elite Division competitors: 36 teams
High School Division competitors: 23 teams
NorCal Elite entrants: NorCal Braves, NorCal Ducks, Fog City, Golden Gate U18, Sniper
NorCal High School entrants: Fog City Jays, Golden Gate U16
Other Elite teams with NorCal participants: Brady's Bunch, Brady's Buddies

NorCal is well represented in both Divisions. I'm thinking there are more NorCal teams in the Elite Division than ever before, especially if one takes into account the Brady teams. In the High School Division, I'm liking the addition of the Fog City Jays, who are the Junior edition of the Fog City boys. Golden Gate has an entry in each Division. Likin' that, too!

Looks like the Challenge will have teams from CA, AZ, TX, CO, WA, ID, IL, UT, MO, NV, and two provinces from Canada - BC and Alberta. Seems like a tournament worth winning!

Heard there was a scrimmage between the NorCal Ducks and Fog City over the weekend. Hmmm. Guys are prepping for this tourney! Weather forecast looks good and I'm looking forward to a great weekend. See you there!

As I was looking at the schedule for the tournament I was noticing the same thing Billax. A lot of teams and boys from Northern California will be playing on many different teams. I was thinking back to a U13 team many years ago where many of the boys that will be on different teams were playing together in Vail and the coach said something like "Take this back to your club teams, show them what it takes to play at a higher level and we will see the level of play improve throughout Northern California." How true that statement was! Games start every hour beginning at 8:00 AM and the last starts at 4:00 pm on Saturday. There is atleast one team from Northern California, or boys from Northern California playing in every hour. I look forward to wandering the sidelines, seeing friends and watching all the boys play. See you all in San Diego!

Who are the NorCal Ducks?

An interesting question, Viking. The origin of the NorCal Ducks is almost lost in the mists of time. Time to write a brief history of the Ducks.

The antecedent of the NorCal Ducks came into being as a team formed to participate in All West Lacrosse summer team camps. The first appearance of the team that would become the Ducks occurred in the summer of 2008 at the All West Lacrosse Team Camp at St. Mary's College in Moraga. A group of recently-graduated eighth graders came together as the Freshmen Fish and entered the Upper Division of Matt Ogelsby's event. About half the team would become Freshmen at Saint Ignatius, while others came to the Fish as members of the 2008 U15 Vail team. While this group of rising Freshman did not win the tournament, they showed well! Greg Angilly, then the Saint Ignatius Coach, was assigned by Matt Ogelsby to be the Coach of the fish.

In 2009, the link between this original group and All West continued, as many of the same guys participated in the inaugural All West Showcase at St. Mary's in the summer of 2009. That team was a mix of former Freshmen Fish (now rising Sophomores) and a large group of incoming Freshmen. Since they weren't all Freshmen anymore, the name of the team became the NorCal Warriors. Luke Ogelsby was the coach of this team. The Warriors went to the Championship game at the Showcase, where they lost to a strong Amador Valley team, 12-8. Just before the Championship game began, the team huddled and -out of nowhere - a couple of the Warriors started chanting, "Quack...Quack, Quack,Quack,Quack." This legendary Mighty Ducks chant was then taken up by the whole team. While history has not recorded the names of the two players who started the chant, legend has it that JW McGovern and Matt Emery were the culprits.

That chant provided the name of the 2010 entry at the AllWest Showcase this past summer at Treasure Island, where the NorCal Ducks won the Elite Division of the Showcase. By this time, players from the original Freshmen Fish, the NorCal Warriors, and some additions - showed up as the NorCal Ducks at the 2010 Showcase. wearing the most audacious, most handsome, most sought-after shooting jerseys in the history of the game, the Ducks took their warm-ups in pure white shooting jerseys, containing the single word QUACK on the extended tail! This team of players who had finished their Freshmen and Sophomore years was undefeated during the Showcase, often facing teams consisting largely of graduated Seniors. During every pre-game huddle the now-famous chant was heard.

To the best of my knowledge, no player who has been invited to play on the Ducks has ever turned down the invitation.

And that should answer the question, "Who are the NorCal Ducks?"

Billax, Well written as always. Thank you. I feel there are a few more words that describe this very talented group of Players.
Refreshing, Fun, and Respectful

Refreshing to watch such a young group play lacrosse the way it is supposed to be played. Great teamwork, motion,
spirit, hustle, sportsmanship, and rising talent. Those huge smiles are refreshing too.

Fun to play on the team, fun to be a teammate, fun to watch as a spectator, and even fun to watch as an opposing coach win or lose.
The fun they are having on the field is contagious to the observers on the sideline.

Respectful to their Teammates, Opponents, Refs, Parents, and Coaches. And most of all respectful to the Game of Lacrosse.

I hope they all stay together and defend their championship at Treasure Island this summer.
Let it Rip!

Some very close games today.

Fog City lost a tough game 11-10 but did qualify for the second bracket playoff.
Brady's Bunch got the first seed in the top playoff bracket.

The other norcal teams were shutout of the playoffs but will play a few challenge matches.

Norcal ducks ended 2-1
Norcal Braves were 1-2
Sniper 1-2

Good competition all around. Good luck to all the boys tomorrow!
