I'm not sure about the girls' move. They were a very strong program, but this was a rebuilding year with a young team. I'll see what I can find out.

I suspect they were happy being a small school to stay were they were!

I believe it was due to our success these part three years as well as Coach Ogelsby's desire for better competition. Not that the teams in D2 weren't good competition for us, but D1 obviously presents a more competitive environment. Coach O has said since he got to MC that one of his goals was for us to move to D1, and now it's happening. We are obviously happy to have won these past 3 years in D2, but we're very excited to compete in D1 and will not shy away from better competition.

...
Here are highlights from this Mornings East Bay Times that picked Devin Spencer of Monte Vista as the player of the year and the First and Second all east bay picks for combined EBAl, DFAL and DVAL and other
leagues See eastbaytimes.com/high-school-sports for the full article with some pics.

Monte Vista's Devin Spencer is East Bay Times boys lacrosse player of the year

Setting up others comes pretty easily to Devin Spencer, especially when those teammates are the talented Monte Vista High boys lacrosse team that won the North Coast Section Division 1 and East Bay Athletic League championships.
I've always put my emphasis on feeding and helping my teammates out in any way," the senior said.
Spencer had team-highs of 48 assists and 110 points, including six in the NCS final. For those contributions and his all-around leadership, he's is being honored as the East Bay Times boys lacrosse player of the year.
"That kid is amazing," Monte Vista coach Joe Rabinowitz said. "He's a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player."
In the NCS title game, Spencer swung around the left side, stutter-stepped and slung in the game's first goal. His first of four assists set up a score that gave Monte Vista a 4-0 lead less than six minutes into the contest. De La Salle fought back to even things by halftime, but then the Mustangs went into another gear, outscoring the Spartans by eight en route to the 14-6 victory.

"He knows exactly what the team needs exactly when they need it," Rabinowitz said of Spencer, whose 52 goals included three in a semifinal win. "He's always cool and collected. No moment is too big for him. He's under control all the time."

He doesn't have the same size as brother Ben -- who is eight inches taller, 30 pounds bigger and a year older -- but Spencer excels at distributing. The two will team up at UMass next year, where Ben said he hopes they can "get the brother duo back going again."

Devin is "super excited" for the prospect of suiting up with Ben, who will be a sophomore.

"It's always fun to play with him," Devin said. "We push each other to our limits."

Asked of his kid brother's strengths, Ben keyed in on Spencer's assisting and field intelligence.

"Good feeder, good IQ," Ben said. "He works really hard in the offseason, lifting and running, so he's in shape all the time. And he's a leader out there."

For those that may have missed the publication last Friday in the Valley and Walnut Creek Journal inserts in the East Bay Times here are the EBAL First, Second Team and Honorable mention. As indicated the EBAL player of the year was Wiley Bonham of Monte Vista. Interestingly the East Bay player of the year per the East Bay Times was Darell Spenceer also of Monte Vista which just shows how talented and deep the Monte Vista Mustangs were this past season and how many kids from MV made either the all EAST Bay or EBAL all league or allstar team rosters and in some cases both. However that is what winning EBAL, NCS, beating SI and going undefeated can do for you. Congrats to the entire MV team and all the other athletes that are listed below and in the East Bay Times all East Bay selections.
