A DI college game this Saturday with four NorCal Alums

If you happen to be a NorCal lax fan wandering around Northern New England this weekend, hoping a lacrosse game breaks out, Saturday will be your lucky day! Well, 'lucky' if you consider temps in the low thirties at the opening FO to be pleasant! Hanover, New Hampshire will be the site of a game between Dartmouth and Yale, both founded prior to the first shot being fired in the Revolutionary War! Dartmouth was founded in 1769 and Yale in 1701. For several arcane economic reasons, the Ivy League has become – in recent years – a close rival to the ACC in the world of DI Lacrosse. For example, LaxPower's computer rankings rate the top team in the Ivies higher than the top team in the ACC. Similarly, LaxPower ranks the #2 team in Ivy League higher than the #2 team in the ACC. But, that's enough of statistics. Let's just say that the Ivies have become a top tier competitor in DI lacrosse.

There are four former NorCal standouts who'll be participating in Saturday's match. They all have surprisingly similar High School bios posted on their respective college lacrosse websites. Here are those bios, with the names deleted to protect the guilty parties. :D

• Four-year letterwinner in lacrosse … was named captain during his junior and senior years … U.S. Lacrosse All-America … Spanish academic award … scholar athlete … first team All-East Bay.

• Four-year member and two-year captain of the lacrosse team at XXXX part of the 2009-10 team that won the North Coast Section Championship with an 18-6 record … named a scholar athlete four times … earned first team All-League honors as a junior … during his senior season he was named league MVP, a US Lacrosse All-American, and Academic All-American and 2013 East Bay Lacrosse Player of the Year.

• Unanimous two-time first-team all-League…Two-time invitee to Jake Reed Nike Blue Chip Camp…Three-time California Gold All-Star team…Two-time Under Armour Underclassmen team member…Two-time US Lacrosse High School All-American…2012 team lacrosse MVP, Team Captain as a Senior: Cal High Player of the Week, 4.5 GPA…Valedictorian finalist… Award for excellence in scholarship, academics, conduct, and devotion to the school…AP scholar with distinction.

• Four-year member and two-year captain of the varsity lacrosse team at XXXX ...  named the school's Freshman Athlete of the Year ... earned All-League honors four times ... was the team's offensive MVP during his sophomore and junior seasons ... Academic All-American as a senior ... League Champions in 2010-11.

The words "scholar" and "academic" show up as much as any others in these four bios, and the Ivies LOVE writing about the scholarly achievements of their jocks.

If you're the kind of guy who fits the profiles above... well, maybe the Ivy League is for you. If it is, don't forget to pack your long underwear!

I have no qualms about naming the four!

For Dartmouth, Doug Strazza and Jack McCormick from DLS; Wiley Osborne from Menlo School.

For Yale, SI grad JW McGovern.

Good stuff.

The #1 ranked (by some) Yale Bulldogs defeated the Dartmouth Big Green in an intense Ivy League contest today. It was, perhaps, no surprise that Yale prevailed this year, 15-5. In other years, Dartmouth has clobbered Yale. It is – after all - the helter-skelter Ivy League!

Here are the stats of the four NorCal guys who played in this contest – all of whom played smoothly and well:
Dartmouth

After the game, Jack McCormick and JW McGovern hung out together on the field for 5 or 6 minutes. They formed just one of the the twenty or so clusters of guys who had played together in High School or on Travel Teams. These guys – playing as intensely as they could against each other during the game – after the game rekindle relationships, reminisce about High School days, talk about long ago travel team victories, and what the future holds for them in the way of careers. This is the way of DI lacrosse. You can beat the crap out of one another during the game, but once the final gun has sounded and the team handshakes have occurred, these mysterious clusters form, with the Chaminade guys from both teams gettin' together, the NorCal guys bringin' each other up to date on their lives, and the Baltimore MIAA guys chattin' it up.

JW and Jack have been good friends for years, stemming from their long-ago travel team days. There is no sport in the world like Lacrosse!
