Big game to start season SRV and SI

Big game to start season SRV and SI

Once again the 2016 season got off to a great start with a huge matchup Saturday at SRV between SRV and SI. Last year SI won 13-11 and then both teams went on to only lose one other game for the rest of the season. No one realized at the time that this was the two best teams in Northern Cal playing in the first game of the season, A shame they couldn't have played another at the end of last year.

This year the wolves were not expected to field a team as good as last year having lost all their starting middies and two of their stating attackmen. The defense was intact although their North Carolina commit and AA Joey Carrington was out with a broken jaw for the SI match. SI is nationally ranked (5th) and were expected to win going away. However the game was close and a bit of a defensive struggle tied 1-1 after the first quarter. It stayed close with SI only up 5-4 after three. The Wolves tied it 5-5 a minute into the 4th quarter. However the Cats superior depth began to wear down a thin middie line for San Ramon and the wolves just ran out of gas and SI prevailed in the end 9-5. It was a close hard fought game between two very good teams. A moral victory for the Wolves I suppose.

SI has a very tough schedule this year but is still expected to be the class of the west. As to San Ramon it would seem that the Wolves who easily defeated Acalanes 18-4 in their opener last Saturday
will be a major factor in the EBAL race and for NCS. Maybe a repeat of last year 1 and 2 in Nor Cal ?

Thanks for the report. Too bad games of this level are played so early in the year.

Acalanes has quite a few injuries. Will be interesting to see how they do tomorrow at Marin Catholic (who were beaten soundly by Monte Vista in their first game).
