The Texans are coming the Texans are coming Y'all

Two of the best teams in the state of Texas are coming to the Bay area beginning tomorrow night and continuing through the weekend. Highland Park the 4th best team in Texas last year will visit Saint Ignacious Thursday 3/12 and Bellarmine on Saturday. Episcopal Dallas the reining state champ in 2014 with an 18-2 record and ranked #1 this year (3-0 so far) will meet SRVHS tomorrow night, Bellarmine on Friday night and complete their visit with a game Saturday at Menlo. These games will test the measure of Nor Cal High School lacrosse and give us some idea of who's hot and who's not in our area.

Highland Park
This team finished 4th in the state of Texas last year going 11-6 with a computer Ranking of 93.24. This will be their first game of the 2015 season. The Fighting Scots are meeting probably the two best teams in Nor Cal and I would be surprised if HP can win either game. SI as usual is loaded and the Bells are right there ready to duke it out with SI for the Central Coast #1 team. Bellarmine had a good team last and their JV's went undefeated and included a win over the SI JV for the first time in history or so I was told. I would expect that both SI and Bellarmine will win theses matchups' comfortably.

Episcopal Dallas

Episcopal Dallas could be a different story as the Eagles were the State of Texas Champs last year with an 18-2 record beat Highland Park twice and this year are 3-0, 98.5 PR and again ranked #1. They will not play SI but will meet Bellarmine on Friday night after opening at SRVHS on Thursday. Don't discount SRVHS. Although currently ranked only 10th in Nor Call with a 1-1 record and a 94.4 PR they looked good against a Marin Catholic team winning 15-8 Saturday. They lost to SI in their traditional opener 13-11 but out scored the Wildcats 8-5 in the second half twice coming within 1 goal before losing by 2 . Episcopal Dallas has two Div 1 middies one committed to Duke and the other to Syracuse but I don't think Texas HS lacrosse overall is as good as Nor Cal. So this will be a good test. Although SRVHS may not be the best team in Nor Cal they are still very good. Their offense is better than last year and the defense is getting better and potentially can be the best in the EBAL. North Coast Section appears to be another battle between the perennial powers, DLS last year's champ, MV and SRVHS the 2014 EBAL champ.
I think it is unlikely that if Episcopal Dallas should beat the Wolves Thursday night they would have much left in the tank to beat Bellarmine the next evening. The Eagles complete their bay area visit against Menlo School on Saturday which this year is a pretty good team and will be no pushover. Nice to see a Nor Cal sweep but a 2-1 result very doable.

The first day of competition went well for the Nor Cal schools as SI defeated a good Highland Park team 9-6 . Was advised the breakdown of the SI game 1st Qtr. SI 3-1 half SI 4-2 third Qtr. SI 8-3 final SI 9-6.

At the same time in Danville SRV defeated Episcopal Dallas 10-8.
This was a huge game for SRV as Episcopal Dallas was the 2014 champ of the state of Texas and ranked as the #1 team in the south this year sporting a 3-0 record and a 98.8 PR by lax power. The wolves appeared from the outset totally outclassed training 5-1 at the half and falling to 6-1 early in the third period. It appeared I would eat my words that winning two games against Episcopal Dallas was" very doable"

However SRV suddenly became a different team showing character and grit. They tied it 6-6 after three periods. Once SRV realized they could play with the Texas kids they began winning faceoffs getting ground balls and in general totally controlling the game. They scored 3 more times in the fourth quarter to take a seemingly insurmountable lead 9-6. However the Texas kids were not state champs for nothing and fought back scoring twice when SRV was down a man in the last three minutes, closing to 9-8. However with less that a minute left Austin French scored his third goal to provide a 2 goal cushion and securing the win 10-8. This was huge win for both SRVHS and the reputation of Nor Cal lacrosse. What a come back!!

We will now see whether Bellarmine ranked # 1 in the Central Coast currently by Lax Power's computers at 98 8 even ahead of SI can further enhance Nor Cal prestige with wins tonight against Episcopal Dallas and then on Saturday against Highland Park. It would seem to be "very doable"

It appears Bellarmine did not fare as well against the Texas teams. It would be great to get a report on the games.

Nice job SI going 3-0 against the Texas and San Diego (Coronado and Torrey Pines) teams over the last week.

Bellarmine regrettably dropped both games to ESD and Highland. Leading most of the game by 2-3 goals Friday vs. ESD some very late turnovers led to the eventual defeat 10-9. Bells outplayed ESD the majority of the contest but in the end were not able to prevail. The following days game featured a very impressive Highland Park squad. The HP team was very deep, fast and talented boasting at least 9 quality recruits, many of them SO/JR's. Bells looked to be a bit sluggish perhaps due to the tough loss the night before. However, the HP team was very efficient and executed well. As a spectator I believe HP would defeat ESD with relative ease.

Yes according to some of the Episcopal Dallas parents they felt Highland Park might be the best team in Texas this year. Apparently these two schools Highland Park the public school and Episcopal Dallas the private school seem to alternately dominate the Texas HS lacrosse scene. If that is the case then the win by SI over Highland Park becomes that more impressive. It appears that this may not be the year that Bellarmine can dethrone the Wildcats.

As to who is hot and who is not a big game was played tonite at Monte Vista where the previously unbeaten Mustangs 5-0 ranked # 1 in the Lax Pr were spanked by SRV 14-4. After a close first qrt SRV opened up a 7-3 lead at the half. Things got no better for the Mustangs in the second half as SRV extended their lead to 10-3 after three qrt. SRV was the aggressor winning most of the faceoffs and ground balls. This year their offense is much improved and they have 4-5 players capable of scoring . This was SRV's best defensive game as twice they played with 2 men down without being scored on. There will be a huge showdown Saturday as Bellarmine comes to SRV and we will see if the Bells are better than they fared this past weekend and if in fact the SRV kids are as good as they showed tonight.

Another team to watch is Amador now 5-0 but have they played a tough enough schedule. On paper MV looked to be favored against SRV but they hadn't played an SI or an Episcopal Dallas. The close loss by SRV to SI 13-11 in their opener now appears to be significant. I think we will know a lot more after games this Saturday of who's hot and who is not.

The Marin teams are clearly struggling after so many good players graduated from Marin Catholic, Redwood, and Novato and several young players in Marin took their game to SI. Like to hear from the Amador supporters, the Sacrament area folks, SI, DLS and Royal Blue and the Acalanes fans. Piedmont looks good in Div two along with the Dons. Who looks interesting in your area? College Park?

That is an impressive win for SRV! Having graduated 21 seniors last year Bellarmine remains strong but definately fielding a young squad. The game Sat should be a good gauge for the boys development this year.

Early season stuff

Postby Royalbluelax » Fri Mar 20, 2015 10:26 pm

Grampa: Some really good wins there by the Wolves. Think the wins over Coronado and Episcopal, although good, are nowhere near as meaningful as the big win over Monte Vista or the close loss to SI. The Dons scrimmaged SI (and let's face it, scrimmages between top teams are essentially games, the only qualifiers being if guys are hurt or otherwise unavailable), with SI beating us either 10-5 or 10-6. (It was one of those two scores; just don't recall.)

SI is the top dog this year, in my book. Don't see anyone on their schedule (outside of possibly Landon or Gonzaga) beating them.

We have a lot of good players back, but need to tighten things up a bit. We have gotten out to some good leads, including over MV, Marin Catholic, and Piedmont, and then simply given up some goals with unfocused play. We barely pulled out tonight's game against Marin Academy (11-10 in 2 OT's). The MA goalie stopped a whole lot of shots, and they have very good team speed. Hope we can improve and give SRV a real game. Look forward to seeing the Wolves again.

As usual, the early season Laxpower rankings are hard to comprehend. The Regional rankings show a bunch of teams with one or two games played up near the top. How is that even possible? LOL.

Well laxdad2 the game Saturday between Bellarmine and SRV was as good as was anticipated between two very good teams. SRV prevailed 8-6 but not without a dog fight. The Bells jumped to a quick 3-0 lead scoring on their first 3 uncontested shots at long range and it appeared a rout was on. Perhaps the turning point was that SRV trailing 5-2 was able to score their 3rd goal before the half with only seconds on the clock leaving it 5-3 at the half.

Once again as in the SI, and Episcopal Dallas games SRV was a different team in the second half. The offense came alive winning groundballs, good passing, unselfish shots and assists and the defense challenged all shots. At the end of the third period the game was tied 5-5. SRV forged ahead in the fourth quarter to take a 7-5 lead but the Bells weren't done and scored their first goal of the second half with about three minutes left. However, SRV won the faceoff and scored again with two minutes left giving them a 2 goal cushion. Another Bellarmine turnover allowed the Wolves to run out the clock. This was a well played game between two evenly matched teams on warm spring afternoon with an enthusiastic crowd. Both teams appear to be at the top of their game. However not sure the Bells can topple SI this year. In talking to their fans that is definitely their goal. This should probably end this series of posts as we have gotten a little off track from " The Texans are Coming." They did and have gone home with mixed results. However both Texas teams lost to a Nor Cal team Dallas Episcopal (now 8-1) to SRV and Highland Park to SI.

Some new thoughts:

Glad to hear from Royalbluelax, Carrera etc. It would be great to hear from folks in Sacramento? Oak ridge , Granite Bay ,Davis ? Can anyone up there win or go deep in the playoffs ? Can SI run the table or will they get derailed on their trip back east ? How does this SI team shape up ? They won a close one in their opener 13-11 with SRV but it may be that the Wolves are just that good..

How about div 2. I think Marin Catholic 2-4 may still be the best in Marin as they have had a brutal opening schedule and might be able now to win the majority of the games they have left? Acalanes still probably the cream of the crop with a big game with SRV in a week ? Piedmont looks tough. What about DLS defending NC champs? They lost a lot of kids to graduation but they like SI are capable of reloading. Their 2 loses were against two of the best teams in So Cal. Expect the game between SRV and DLS will be huge. Can someone from the Spartan nation give us some insight? Can MV bounce back from a bad loss 14-4 to SRV? What's with the apparent drop in strength of the Marin teams ? ( graduation and defections to SI) After all Novato and Redwood played for the North Coast Section championship won by Redwood only two years ago.

There have got to be a lot of new lacrosse parents and friends out there. As Royalbluelax pointed out last year we need some new folks to participate in this forum. I know there are interested folks out there as there were over 3000 readers of the multiple posts on the Alcatraz Outlaw and 3D tryouts and conflicts. The old posters and their kids in many cases have graduated and moved on. It would be a shame to see the only local forum on lacrosse to die on the vine. Who has some opinions or insights to share. The season is about 1/3 over and their are some trends developing for sure. Sound off and share your thoughts with the Nor Cal lacrosse community.

I just took a look at Marin Academy's record, and 4 of their 6 games have gone to OT, and two of those went to double OT. They are building character early in the season with tough games like that!
