lamolax,
The conditions under which the California Interscholastic Federation may elect to have Statewide Championships in a sport can be found here.

Key quote:
At least 60 percent of all CIF schools participate in the sport in the same season or at least 6 or more Sections have championships in the sport to include at least 2 in the north and 2 in the south. The committee may recommend that proposals for state championships be inaugurated as regional events even if criteria is met.

While SoCal has 2 Sections with Championships in Lacrosse, in NorCal only NCS has a Sectional Lacrosse Championship. We'd need either CCS or Sac-Joaquin to host a NorCal Sectional Championship (and then two more Sections from anywhere in the State) before CIF's minimum standards for a State Championship can be met.

Back in the old days when we ran things on a club level all by ourselves, we had some amazing state tournaments. I was in charge of the '98 California State Championships held at Cal State Hayward (now Cal State-Eastbay) and that tournament was amazing. The final pitted Serra from San Diego coached by Russ Olsen and starring Spencer Wright (Syracuse) versus Berkeley High coached by Chris Sparhawk and starrring Ben Schuler (UCSB).

When we went CIF, we knew that there would be sacrifices, but they were ones we were willing to make for the growth of the game. The biggest sacrifice that we made was giving up our state tournament. I'll do my best to explain:

CIF, or the California Interscholastic Federation, is the organization that oversees high school sports in the state of Calfornia. The CIF divides the state into 10 sections that represent geographic regions. The teams in the north bay and east bay are members of the NCS, or North Coast Section. Bay area teams in the south and peninsula play in the CCS, or Central Coast Section. There are other sections in San Joaquin, LA, San Diego, etc. When the CIF adopted lacrosse on a state level, it was up to each section to recognize it as well and put into place an organization that would oversee the sport the same way they oversee every other sport in this state. When CIF recognized lacrosse, the NCS, CCS, and San Diego sections immediately recognized it as well and play began under the sections guidance and governance. The section in the LA area, the largest section in the state, decided not to recognize lacrosse because they felt there wasn't enough interest in their section overall for the sport. Remember that this is a huge geographic regions with zillions of schools.

The CIF on the state level sees lacrosse as a NEW sport, even though it's been played in California at the high school level for a long time now. They have only recognized it for a short time. Has it even been ten years? They told us that until there were enough SECTIONS recognizing and playing lacrosse, and holding championships for those sections, would they even CONSIDER a state tournament. Remember they see things from a total state perspective and not a perspective from inside the game as we would. We know there are tons of teams playing and being added every year. They look at it as only a small percentage of schools playing lacrosse STATE WIDE!

So to make a long story short- When we have enough sections throughout the state playing for championships, we can then apply for a state championship. We were told back in the early part of this decade that they would be very surprised if it happened within ten years, and they were right. It may be another 5-10 years at least!

Anyone have anything else to add?

The 98 tourney was awesome! I was a freshman at Berkeley High that year and the star of that team was MJ Crickmore! Not to take anything away from Ben Schooler of course. To this day MJ is one of if not THE best player I have ever seen in the East Bay. Too bad Spencer Wright was an uber manchild...

You're right BHS Coach- I forgot that MJ was on that team. He was unstoppable! MJ was definitely one of the greatest middies in Nor Cal lacrosse history. I've been doing this so long (coaching and teaching) that I forget who was in what class, and on what team in what years. Its hard to keep everyone straight!

The greatest feeling for me as a High School coach over the years is attending WCLL or other MCLA games and recognizing half the names on the roster and remembering them all as youth players or puny freshman in high school. Seeing your own players climb through the ranks and grow up sharing the same love for the game that you introduced them to is rewarding and fulfilling to say the least.

DId anyone mention the Del Mar Tournament? It obviously wasn't in NorCal but a lot of teams from NorCal went down for it. It also brought in teams from around the country as well (teams from Texas and Maryland the year I went to watch SI play, 1999). I'd love to know the history of that tournament. It was played on Sat-Sun, so CIF would have killed it if it did not die before that. I'm not even sure if the polo fields on which it was played are still there.

The Fun In The Sun Tournament! At one time the biggest lacrosse tournament west of the Mississippi, If I remember correctly, it was done in after the '99 or 2000 season after the Del Mar Polo Fields stopped hosting it. The Polo Fields were only allowed to have a certain amount of events per year and lacrosse was bumped. Before it was in Del Mar, it was call the Schauffelberger (sp?) Tournament and played at various locals in San Diego County including Mt Carmel High School and Dusty Rhodes Field by the airport. I think it lasted about 12 years.
