Can anyone beat Monte Vista

Postby Grampa Lax » Fri Apr 29, 2016 5:11 pm

The question is " Can anyone beat Monte Vista in 2016" Well the number two team in both the Lax power poll and the Max Prep Poll the De La Salle Spartans will get their chance tonight. The Spartans 12-4 will take the first shot against the top ranked and undefeated 18-0 Mustangs. If the Mustangs win tonight only their old rivals SRV 9-7 stand in their way for an undefeated regular season and the EBAL championship. Although the Spartans will host the game and are a solid team both offensively and defensively I doubt the Mustangs will be pushed that greatly. Expect that MV will win this one by 4-6 goals.. Hope someone is going that can report the score and details. Should be a fun game to watch.

Also on tab tonight in another EBAL matchup the 9-7 SRV Wolves and 10-5 Foothill Falcons both fighting for a high seed in the Div 1 NCS playoffs. SRV currently stands at # 5 and Foothill # 7 in the Max Prep Div 1 standings . Expect an easy win for the Wolves who are probably because of their very rigorous out of league schedule under rated with their 9-7 overall record. ( rated the most difficult schedule in the NCS section and which included 5 losses to So Cal powerhouses and east coast Lawrenceville. Prep ) The Wolves will get their shot against their old rivals next Friday night in the last game of the regular season at MV.

SRV easily defeated Foothill tonight 19-4 leading 12-2 at the half and with a running clock throughout most of the third and fourth quarter. SRV may be the only team that can give their old rival a test.

I was advised at the SRV game that MV was blowing out DLS leading 11-2 with still 11 minutes to go in the fourth. Yikes!!
Hope someone was there to report what happened. Thought that MV would win going away but not like that. No don't think anyone can beat the Mustangs and they will very likely win EBAL, NCS and run the table with an undefeated season.

The final was 14-6 MV. Definitely a mismatch at least tonight. Any spectators?

MV's seniors absolutely dominated the game last night. Tabor was a beast in the cage all night long, and didn't give up anything soft. DLS finally started getting some feeds to the inside late in the game, but it was too little too late for the Spartans. The Mustangs have an underrated defense that is very consistent from game to game.

On offense, the MV attack unit absolutely took DLS's defense apart. Lots of unselfish play and great passing from the MV offense. Just too many threats all over the field for DLS to hope to stop that offense.

The only thing beating MV will be MV. They really don't have a "weak link" to try and exploit. All their offense can create for themselves but also see the field well enough to move the ball smartly. The D overall win their one-on-one match ups, but when needed, have a 1 & a 2. Goalie - solid. They don't make many mistakes, but if you do, they make you pay every time. New coaching staff has done a great job with this team and have a great grasp of the lax chess match on the field.

As sports go, the only way their season could end horribly, is if the only game they lose this year is the same game the last time they lost.

And there's no way that happens to teams like this...

According to Laxpower (so take it for what it is worth) as of yesterday, the teams with the three highest strength of schedule were 1. De Lasalle, 2. SRV, and. 3. MV, in that order. If you look at RPI, which rates more by the records of your opponents adjusted by the records of their opponents, the order is 1. De Lasalle, 2. MV, and SRV is 7 or 8. I throw in RPI, only because I think it is still used by the NCAA selection committee in determining at large participants for the national tournament.

Also note that if MV had to play themselves, their SOS would be higher :)
What if the hokey-pokey IS what its all about?

Agree 2lax feet that MV is a real juggernaut with no obvious weaknesses. Tonight their old rival SRV will take their best shot. Last year SRV beat this same team that were mostly juniors 3 times 14-4,
15-8, and in the NC'S final 9-5 That SRV team ,18-2, was the Wolves best ever. The only problem is that two middie lines and 2 out of three attackman are gone. Oops( that is a problem)

SRV will play hard but MV not only wants a EBAL championship,a NCS title and yes an undefeated season but now has lost 5 times in a row from 2014,2015 to the Wolves. That alone should be enough motivation for the Mustangs tonight.

SRV chances.

Having lost so many of their offensive players they rely on their defense 4 of whom are Div 1 recruits and who are all underclassman to win. This is a good defense and next year it should be a great defense.

The offense although improving with so many young players still suffers from too many unenforced turnovers and the inability to get inside to score. Coach Worstel believes in scheduling challenging
out of league opponents to play in April so that the team is ready for the playoffs in May. The Wolves though only 10-7 had the toughest schedule by far in the NCS. SRV ended with a run of 5 games which they won against league opponents in a lopsided manner to end the season. However that opposition was weak!

The team is probably only able to score 5-6 goals a game against good opposition in 6 on 6 set and must get 3-4 goals in transition and another 2-3 when a man up meanwhile asking the defense to hold the opposition to under 8-10 goals. This will be very difficult against Monte Vista.

In mid season there were some bad losses and a breakdown on offense losing to Lawrenceville 13-5 Bellarmine 10 -4,Poway 13-4 and Palos Verdes 13-3. Against DLS they jumped out to a 5-2 lead at half and then in the second half there was a breakdown again in the offense with 15 turnovers and unenforced errors resulting in a disheartening 7-6 loss to the Spartans. This is a much improved team today and I think they are better than their number 5 ranking in both lax power and Max Prep. I suspect MV will have to beat them twice tonight and in the Playoffs to win NCS but this is the best MV team ever and doubt the Wolves even on their best night can upset the Mustangs. My hunch an 11 -6 win for Monte Vista to go 20-0 and a EBAL championship.

Hope we might get some reports on this game tonight. I will miss it as will be at the girl's MV/ SRV game where I have a granddaughter playing. Like to hear about it for sure. Should be fun as are all rivalry games especially MV and SRV.

Well for what it is worth Max prep which is the official reporting service by contract with the NCS has SRV at # 1 13.5,# 2 DLS 13.2 and #3 MV 11.7 for strength of schedule. That is the computer service NCS will use. I think that is all a bit subjective not withstanding the different computers but MV didn't play any of the So Cal bigs except Loyola this season although I don't think it is particular important except for their risking an undefeated season. Both SRV and DLS had a more challenging out of league schedule IMO. However the fact that MV beat SI tells it all for me. That is always the gold standard. MV beat the Wildcats quite handidly and deserve their #1 ranking in the state whether on computers, RPI or just gut reaction for that matter.

Both DLS and SRV will probably get another shot at MV in the playoffs but their won loss records will affect the seeding. Expect that MV will be # 1 DLS 2 ,Granite Bay 3, Davis 4, SRV 5 Amador 6 etc by the computers. However don't believe the Sacramento schools with their gaudy records of 16-2 and 15-3 will get to the finals. Their subjective SOS is suspect. Think it will be MV and SRV in one semifinal and DLS and Granite Bay in the other based on the anticipated seedlings. Expect a DLS /MV final with the same results as last week .

Advised that SRV lost 8-6 trailed 3-2 at the half! The Wolfe defense did What they were suppose to do holding MV to under 10. The offense just didn't quite have enough pop! Think that was a heck of an effort by the Wolves as they went toe to toe with the Mustangs the entire game. The wolves got their 6 goals 6 on 6 but didn't get the extra needed goals in transition and didn't have any man up goals either that were needed for the upset. Great game plan. Also MV's Joe Tabor another big night in the net with 16 saves .

See also Carrera's report of game with pictures in separate blog SRV/ MV last night that he found in the East Bay Times with pictures. Take a look! Think these two old rivals will meet again in the NCS semi's! . Always tough to beat a good team twice. Not a cake walk for MV with SRV still there to spoil things. Hope someone saw the game! Must have been a dandy! Glad to see some publicity in the press for the sport.
