Wow - wow again : Torrey Pines Stuns No. 1 St. Ignatius 10-9 With a Triumphant Comeback Win in the Battle of California’s Elite (per West side Lax)

Torrey Pines midfielder Zach Zien assisted fellow midfielder Andrew Perkins who would blast one by St. Ignatius goaltender to eventually seal the deal for Head Coach Jono Zissi and his Falcons. St. Ignatius’ previously undefeated season was brought to a screeching halt at the 5:52 mark of the fourth quarter when Perkins ripped one home to witness the back of the net bounce and have his teammates swarm him in pandemonium.

“This was a game that we had circled on our calendars a long time ago,” said Head Coach Jono Zissi. “We needed to make a statement, and we did. With there being no state championship in the state of California, this was the equivalent of that. This is an awesome rivalry and our kids definitely rose to the challenge.”

St. Ignatius (16-1), a west coast team with a mass amount of respect from coaches across the country, went on a scoring melee during the first quarter of the epic California showdown with goals by Joe Lang, JW McGovern, and Will McKee, but Zach Zien would break the ice for the Falcons with 4:09 left. Torrey Pines (12-3) scored three more goals before the end of the opening quarter, including one from Cornell-bound attackman Sean Doyle, who led TP with four goals and an assist on the day.

Coach Zissi’s squad threw jabs right back all day, and it was clear that after an electrifying first quarter that his players were going to be the ones setting the tone for the entire 48-minute duration of play.

The Wildcats would then outscore the Falcons 3-2 in the following quarter to claw back and rip the lead out of their hands before heading into the locker room all tied up at 6-6 with the presumed underdogs.

St. Ignatius came out of the locker room looking like they were going to take absolute control of the game by playing their style of lacrosse as the Wildcats got goals from Peter Doyle at the 6:29 mark and Spencer Evans almost three minutes later. Torrey Pines would refuse to go the entire third quarter scoreless as midfielder Dustin Skousen streaked down the field and dished one to Doyle who would bring the Falcons back to life with his hat-trick goal with 42 seconds remaining before going into the final quarter of the California classic.

Coach Zissi’s boys trailed their opponents 7-8 going into the fourth quarter, but sophomore midfielder Owen Weselak would continue to be spark more offensive opportunities from the face-off ‘X,’ going 60 percent with 15 of his 25 draws won. Wing-play by Spencer Brewster and Trent Cady also helped propel the Falcons past the Wildcats for the upset in the end. St. Ignatius’ Chad Cohan would score his team’s ninth and final goal of the game to go up 9-7 before Torrey Pines put three more away with Perkins’ being the game-winner to send the newly defeated Wildcats home. The Falcons defense kept the door shut for the remainder of the match-up and St. Ignatius’ highly touted offensive unit couldn’t hit the net down the stretch.

Coach Zissi and company swarmed sophomore goaltender Bryce Cady to celebrate the 10-9 victory on Thacher School’s home field. Cady nabbed eight of his twelve saves during the last 24 minutes of play.

“We took this game for bragging rights, and we needed to win badly,” Coach Zissi said. “This game was just huge for us as we come down the home stretch for our season.”
