Foothill Falcons -- # 4 seed -- 14-8 record (10-4 league record; 4th in EBAL) -- PR of 96.73 -- ranked #4 in NC/San Joaquin sections by Laxpower -- strength of schedule # 4 -- beat Mountain View, beat Granada, Livermore, Cal High, and arch rival Amador Valley 2X each; split with San Ramon Valley and Monte Vista; lost to Bellarmine, St. Ignatius, De la Salle (2X), Rancho Bernardo (SoCal), and Lincoln (Oregon). Falcons arrive in quarter finals after vanquishing Northgate 17-2. Falcons' 16-7 win over Redwood moves them to semi-finals against De La Salle in rematch of last year's title game.

De la Salle Spartans -- #1 seed -- 19-3 record (13-1 league record; 1st in EBAL) -- PR of 99.14 -- ranked #1 in NC/San Joaquin sections by Laxpower -- Strength of schedule # 3 -- beat Berkeley, Miramonte, Foothill Santa-Ana, defeated all EBAL opponents except Monte Vista twice, with overtime wins against SRV and Foothill; split with Monte Vista (won 12-8; lost 8-16); only other losses to Coronado and St. Ignatius. First-seeded Spartans arrive in quarter finals as 14-4 victors over Dublin Gaels. A 15-2 trouncing of Las Lomas moves the Spartans into the semi-finals.

This one's a reprise of last year's championship match, with the difference being that De La Salle has already beaten the Falcons twice this season, 10-6 in April, and 9-8 in overtime in May. Both teams are balanced, with Foothill scoring 12 per game and giving up 7; the Spartans score 10 and give up 5.

And there's the rub for the Pleasanton team. Offense sells tickets. Defense wins championships. As tough and outstanding as Foothill's D is, and as tops as their goal keeping is, De La Salle's been just a little better on the defensive end this season -- and their goal keeper, Teddy Wilm is no slouch, having been in between the pipes for the last two DLS NCS championships, if memory serves. That's a big game keeper.

I thought last year was the Falcons' season, and they didn't quite close the deal. This year is the Spartans'. Spartans by 2.

Going purely on trending, I will take Foothill in this second rematch by 1.

DLS handled pretty easily, MV, SRV and Foothill in the first half of the season, but went to overtime twice and lost once in the second half to these three teams. There may have been some overconfidence at play there in the second round on DLS part, but I keep wondering if they might have peaked a little early. Don't get me wrong - DLS is still a powerhouse, but the top 4 teams in EBAL are now all so close that the fractions will count.

Foothill is going to leave it on the field. I'm sure they remember well last year's NCS final and having the game in grasp, but not being able to close it out. I think their motivation is going to be high. Either way, this is going to be a fun game to watch.

I have to admit, I was expecting a little more "O" from the Falcons. Anyone out there?
