MCLA Championships: Arizona State

Postby CATLAX MAN » Thu May 13, 2010 5:16 pm

Arizona State has advanced to the National Semi-Finals for the MCLA today with a win over Colorado. The local angle here is that the 3 Westfall brothers from Monte Vista all play for this team.

You can follow the National Tourney and see some video streaming of the games at http://www.collegelax.us

I'm belatedly following up on CATLAX Man's post about the ASU Sun Devils. Michigan did win the MCLA crown, defeating the Arizons State, 12-11. Still, the Sun Devils garnered lots of post-season awards, including the following team members who were named MCLA All-Americans. I've underlined those from NorCal:

2010 MCLA All-America Awards
1st Team Attack...................Tyler Westfall
1st Team Midfield.................Ryan Westfall
3rd Team Attack....................Eric Neslon
3rd Team Defense.................Ian Anderson
Honorable Mention Midfield...Anthony LaFlam
Honorable Mention Defense...Justin Krider
Honorable Mention Goalie......Dylan Westfall

Additionally, the NorCal pipeline to Arizona State continues, as the following Freshmen from NorCal are on the roster at ASU:
2010 Commits to ASU
Matt Hetwer Defense Amador Valley
Grant Theobald Attack California
Chris DeLuca Goalie Amador Valley
Nick Maruyama Defense Menlo
David Haggerty Attack Granite Bay
Logan Quinn Midfield Acalanes
Broc Schall Midfield/Attack Foothill
James Torrey Attack California

Lax Magazine, the official publication of US Lacrosse, lists Arizona State as #1 in the nation in their mid-summer, early-bird MCLA picks for 2011, as can be read at:

Fianlly, Lax Magazine's official pre-season rankings picks the Sun Devils as #2. The article can be seen at:

ASU will have another strong team on the field again this year and will receive significant contributions from all its Nor Cal grown players. All the freshman mentioned by Billax will likely make the travel squad with the exception of Matt Hetwer and David Haggerty who I believe are not attending ASU.

ASU and coach Malone have put together a challenging schedule playing some of the best programs in the MCLA. The 2011 non-conference schedule includes trips to:

U of Michigan #1
Michigan State #12
Colorado State #5
U of Colorado #8

Home Games with:

Simon Frasier #4
Boston College #20
University of New Hampshire #21

Come tournament time this team should be prepared for a deep run and hopefully another MCLA D1 championship game.

Go Sun Devils !

Thanks, Bulldog! That's good news about our NorCal guys. Sorry for the misinformation about Messrs. Haggerty and Hetwer. Pulled their names straight from the ASU lax website. Maybe this will get the Sun Devils to update it.

Arizona State advanced today to the the Semi-Finals of the 2011 MCLA Championship in Denver with an 8-3 win over Chapman University. Arizona State was lead today by several NorCal grown players including Dylan Westfall/Monte Vista( 15 Saves), Ryan Westfall/Monte VIsta (1 Goal), and Logan Quinn/Acalanes (2 Goals).

Other contributing NorCal players on this year's ASU team:

James Torrey/Cal High
Grant Theobald/Cal High
Chris Carvalho/Cal High
Chris DeLuca/Amador Valley
Brock Schall/Foothill
Nick Maruyama/ Menlo

Friday night ASU takes on University of Michigan (UM) the 3 time defending MCLA champion. UM is undefeated in 2011 at 18-0 and looks to finish that way with their 4th championship before joining the NCAA D1 varsity ranks next year. ASU will do their best to spoil that and avenge last year's 1 goal loss in the championship. You can enjoy the game on Fox College Sports Channel (Channel 414 Comcast) at 6pm this Friday. Should be a great game. Go Sun Devils!

:( But go down to BYU in the final 10-8. BYU has some big men (23 - 25 year old men). Great collegiate career for Ryan Westfall comes to and end. Good luck in the future to Dylan, Logan, James and Grant. I remember them all from the Dublin California Lacrosse training cage.
When I make a great play it is because my opponent made me do so.
