Subject: The passing of Bill Massey

With sadness I regretfully tell you about the passing of yet another truly dedicated member of our lacrosse community. William (Bill) Massey played and officiated in Nor Cal for almost three decades.

He reffed many games with his son David, and was truly a great person. Bellow I have attached a few words written by David as well as his obituary. Bill will be truly missed and we all all need to think of him and the rest of Bill's family during these difficult times.

William “Bill” Massey left us Friday morning at the age of 55 after a 9 year battle with Brain Cancer. An avid member of the lacrosse community, Bill played the game across the country for teams like Friends School in Baltimore, MD, the Toulouse Lacrosse Club from the University of Utah, and the Golden Gate men’s club in San Francisco. He always loved the sport of lacrosse but it wasn’t until he moved to California in 1985 when he found his true passion in officiating. Those who were fortunate enough to work a game with him understood his kind, diplomatic manner and grand sense of humor. The Northern California lacrosse community was his second family and he couldn’t have been more proud to be a part of such a supportive network. He leaves behind his wife Cheryl, sons Mark Abel and David Massey, sisters Ruth Anne Taylor and Mary (Dee) Harrison Davis, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. We all deeply miss this extraordinarily kind, hard working man.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday Aug. 9 at 11:00 AM at Pioneer Cemetery 5780 Sunol Blvd. in Pleasanton, CA. 94566. An addition memorial service will be held at a later date at CrossWinds Church 6444 Sierra Court Dublin, CA 94568. Details on that service will be posted at www.catholicobituaries.org

William Joseph Massey ( June 21, 1956 – August 5, 2011), resident of Pleasanton for 24 years, beloved husband, father, brother and professor, left us Friday morning at the young age of 55. Bill was born in Rustin, Louisiana and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland where he graduated from FriendsSchool, class of ‘74. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1978 and soon after obtained a Master’s Degree from the University of Utah. After moving to California in 1985, Bill met the love of his life Cheryl and her son Mark Abel. They joyfully started family life when Bill and Cheryl married in 1987. After their marriage, Bill and Cheryl were blessed by the arrival of their son David in 1989.

Bill has always been an avid lacrosse fan and player but was most passionate about being a referee for the last 25 years. Bill’s other passions were skiing, teaching, and embracing everyone with his grand sense of humor. In his first career, Bill was a gifted counselor who touched the lives of many individuals. However, his second career was where he was able to combine his lifelong passion for computer science with his natural gift of teaching. Bill was most proud of his accomplishments and recognition throughout his tenure as a professor at DeVry University.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Melba Anne Firmin Massey and father, William Joseph Massey. He leaves behind his wife Cheryl, sons Mark Abel and David Massey, sisters Ruth Anne Taylor and Mary (Dee) Harrison Davis, as well as multiple nieces and nephews. We all deeply miss this extraordinarily kind, hard working man.
