Youth Sports Concussions

Postby quickstick » Mon Aug 30, 2010 8:06 pm

On CBS news tonight there was a report about concussions in youth sports. There were film images of boys lacrosse shown. The underlying article that generated the report was from the American Academy of Pediatrics. Football, as you probably all expected, had the most incidences of youth concussions. Somewhat surprisingly women's soccer was next and boys lacrosse was third. As a coach of many years I have been trained repeatedly in basic first aid and CPR. After reading this article what I realized is that we all need significant training in the recognition and recovery of sports concussions. This is especially important since more often than not the concussion is asymptomatic but still damaging to the player.

Here is a link to the article while it lists it at 21 pages it is about an 11 page article with six pages of references and five pages of standardized tests of which many are applicable for use on the sideline. The basic underlying rule is that if any concussion is determined, that player cannot return to play for the remainder of the day. The ramifications to the player of returning him to play for the "benefit of the team" can be traumatic.

I invite you all to read this article and feel free to comment on this important subject on the forum.

When I make a great play it is because my opponent made me do so.

The lacrosse website Laxbuzz has recently taken on this topic and calls for tighter enforcement of the rules: http://laxbuzz.com/
