Stanford to play James Madison in NCAA 1st Round

Stanford finally got its invitation to the dance, the hard way. By winning the MPSF championship and then beating UMass, the Atlantic 10 Conference champion, in a "play in" on May 8, it received an "automatic", if that's the right word for it when you have one slot split between two conference champions. It received a better seed than just being a grudgingly accepted automatic (see Marist College, the Metro Atlantic champions), getting 12th seed which means it plays 5th seed James Madison, the Colonial Conference champion, next Saturday, May 15. That should be a tough game, but winnable if they play their best and Annie Read has a good day in goal. And it's certainly not as tough as their first round game after Stanford's first ever invitation to the NCAA tournament in 2006 where they were seeded 16th and had to play Northwestern in the first round.

You may recall that last year, despite beating Penn, the eventual runner-up for the NCAA title, just the day before the selections were announced, they were not invited at all. Good luck to the Cardinal!
