Turning out to be more of a blog than a message board.

Anyway, this year sucks. Are there any girls games where Nor Cal plays So Cal? I only saw SI versus Poway (not enough games since #2 Scripps has beaten Poway). That means, when all the dust settles, both sides will be screaming that their side of the state is better

Looks like you're using the WestsideLax rankings. Year over year over year they have been way off - at least on the girls side. Even with their new site - which does look nice - I would not put any credibility in their rankings. They have always been off. Laxpower is off in the beginning but is already way closer to the real deal than Westsidelax. Something to be said for math.

1 Coronado 82.39 40 8- 0- 0 CA
2 Scripps Ranch 80.82 29 5- 0- 0 CA
3 Jordan, UT 79.91 97 3- 0- 0 UT
4 Issaquah 79.90 158 6- 0- 0 WA
5 Carondelet 79.73 21 5- 1- 0 CA
6 La Costa Canyon 78.92 26 6- 1- 0 CA
7 Bingham 78.59 134 6- 0- 0 UT
8 Kent Denver 78.30 259 2- 0- 0 CO
9 Cherry Creek V1 78.25 55 4- 1- 0 CO
10 Amador Valley 77.56 17 7- 1- 0 CA
11 Pinnacle 76.94 141 3- 0- 0 AZ
12 St. Ignatius Prep, CA 76.82 33 6- 0- 0 CA
13 Los Alamitos 76.10 47 5- 1- 0 CA
14 Monte Vista, Danville 75.84 10 5- 1- 0 CA
15 Snohomish 75.42 219 3- 0- 0 WA
16 Bainbridge Island 75.38 9 2- 1- 1 WA
17 Lake Oswego 74.92 137 4- 0- 0 OR
18 Menlo School 74.81 11 4- 4- 0 CA
19 Park City 74.79 28 3- 1- 0 UT
20 Poway 74.62 58 4- 1- 0 CA
21 Xavier College Prep 73.88 133 8- 0- 0 AZ
22 California HS 73.55 53 8- 2- 0 CA
23 Centaurus 73.26 251 4- 0- 0 CO
24 Rancho Bernardo 73.18 81 5- 1- 0 CA
25 Eastside CS, WA 72.79 228 4- 1- 0 WA

And with Carondelet handling SI tonight (18-7), things will get even more accurate. Now if they can just take care of Cherry Creek on 4/13 maybe the Norcal teams will get the respect they deserve. Represent Cougars!
If they don't play lacrosse in heaven - I'm not going!

Carondelet versus SI was not all that close 18-7. Now we just need SI to beat Poway

Great win for Carondelet. They have an upcoming trip to Colorado where I believe they play Kent, Cherry Creek and Air Academy. A sweep in Colorado would likely establish Carondelet as the best in the west this year. If any of the Colorado schools play SoCal schools, that would also give you some comparables.

SI already beat Cherry Creek so Carondelet should breeze. South is weaker than the San Diego section, the top head to heads have the San Diego section winning them all. No one from San Diego is playing any of the top 10 Colorado teams this year. EBAL teams have extra games free (less than 20 scheduled), except Carondelet, as do most the San Diego teams. Road Trip!!!!!!

Late coaching changes made scheduling distance games hard since most have to plan for them early. (MV, AV and Foothill :-({|= ). To bad Cal did not play a couple tougher teams during the preseason.

OK, this is nine days old and Carondelet and SI have screwed up the top spot. It will be great to see this report adjusted at the next update to the west rankings (from Lax Mag)

West Girls' Regional Report
1. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 1-0
The Bruins (18-1) continued their dominance by winning their ninth state championship with a 16-11 victory over Air Academy. Cherry Creek is the favorite to repeat with the return of All-American and Princeton recruit Anya Gersoff, who had 84 goals last season.
The Bruins started the 2012 season with a 23-2 thrashing of Grandview (Colo.).
2. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 5-0
The Wildcats, ranked 25th nationally last year, lost just one game last season — a 15-10 setback at Cherry Creek. St. Ignatius lost seven starters but will reload with seniors Tess Mattimore (Skidmore), Erin Cavalier (Catholic), Erin Geraghty and Alexa Robinson, plus junior Nicole Vincelette (Cal).
After rattling off five straight wins to open 2012, St. Ignatius meets Cherry Creek on Saturday.
3. Coronado (Calif.), 3-0
Coronado has the firepower for a run at its second straight CIF championship. The Islanders (22-1) are led Martha Byrne, Mollie Privett, Caroline Carlson, Sarah Anderson, Erica Keamy and Meganne Weissenfels.
Coronado is 3-0 after registering wins over California schools Cathedral Catholic, La Costa Canyon and Westview.
4. Bainbridge Island (Wash.), 0-1
The Spartans (14-0) took home their eighth Division I state title by knocking off the five-time defending champ Lakeside. Junior goalie Maddie Stevenson, senior middie Kelsey Mackin and senior defender Grace Deery-Schmitt were first-team All-State picks last year. But the Spartans suffered a surprising 11-10 loss to Issaquah (Wash.) to open the season.
5. Carondelet (Calif.), 2-1
When Carondelet won North Coast Section Division I championship in 2011, the players and coaches knew there was more history to be made. Some top players were just sophomores. An explosive lineup features nine returning starters and includes juniors Erin Jeffery (89g, 35a), Kerianne Hunt (55g, 20a, 65 DCs), Morgan Castelein (45g, 15a, 45 GBs) and Cali Castagnola (62g, 23a). Junior goalie Katie Merritt (201 saves, .634 GAA) will lead a stout defense.
Carondelet coach Rick Jeffery said his team's success is indicative of the way the sport has grown in Northern California over the past decade. "They have been playing lacrosse now since they were in fifth and sixth grade just like the girls on the East Coast," he said.
After wins over Acalanes (Calif.) and Menlo School (Calif.), the Cougars lost a one-goal game to Amador Valley (Calif.).
6. Air Academy (Colo.), 2-0
Air Academy fell just short to Cherry Creek in the state championship game. Navy recruit Miranda Beal returns after finishing last season with 71 goals and 23 assists. The Kadets have outscored their first two in-state opponents by a combined score of 47-6.
7. Kent Denver (Colo.), 2-0
Kent Denver (13-5) had an impressive run to the state semifinals last season and will continue to compete with the best teams in the region. Top returning players include Lucy Mower (Vermont), Lucy Dikeou (Stanford), Lizzie Strazza (Florida), Molly Coates (Cal) and Caroline Schlegel (Cal).
The Sun Devils could be 5-0 heading into an intrastate rivalry against Carondelet on April 10.
8. Alta (Utah), 2-2
Alta (16-0) is one of the nation's most dominant programs, winning three consecutive Division I state championships and going undefeated in each of those seasons. Alta returns 12 players for 2012, including starters Malia Stephens, Regina Farley, Carly Steadmen, Shayna Hunt, Emerald Ward and Haysun Choi.
The Hawks lost back-to-back games at the season's outset but quickly evened their record at .500.
9. Torrey Pines (Calif.), 0-0
The reigning CIF champion (18-2) lost a solid group to graduation and will rely on younger players. Sophomores Kacey McKinnon and Camille Doan should get quality minutes.
10. Lake Oswego (Ore.), 2-0
The defending state champs are young but talented. Senior Paige Timberg (Coastal Carolina) and Libby Nielsen and junior Alyssa "Dragon" Dragelin are the team's most experienced players.
Emerging Rivalry
Cherry Creek (Colo.) at St. Ignatius (Calif.), March 24
The two West Coast powerhouses will play for the third time since 2009. Cherry Creek won the first matchup 19-8 in Colorado and won against last year 15-10 at St. Ignatius.
The third time could be the charm for the Wildcats. Either way, the matchup features excellent star power.
Cherry Creek has one of the region's best players in Anya Gersoff, who had 84 goals last season and led her team to its ninth state championship. St. Ignatius has a solid core of returning players, including junior Nicole Vincelette (Cal). St. Ignatius coach Amy Harms said the key for her team is adapting to Cherry Creek's solid stick stills and the quickness of their offense.

West Girls' Regional Report (April 18)

by Todd Karpovich | LaxMagazine.com
Top Performers

1. Cherry Creek (Colo.), 9-1
The Bruins knocked off former-No. 1 Carondelet (Calif.), 23-11, earning a signature victory for Colorado lacrosse. Since losing to St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.) on March 24, Cherry Creek has won six straight and is position for its 10th state championship.

2. Coronado (Calif.), 9-1
The Islanders opened the season with nine consecutive victories before losing 9-7 to Holy Cross (Md.). Coronado's only other game last week — against Patrick Henry — was rained out, but the Islanders have a huge matchup April 19 against Torrey Pines (Calif.).

3. La Costa Canyon (Calif.), 10-1
The Mavericks picked up an impressive, 10-5 victory over Torrey Pines (Calif.). La Costa Canyon has now won nine consecutive games with upcoming tests against Mission Hills (Calif.) and Scripps Ranch (Calif.).

4. Carondelet (Calif.), 9-1
The Cougars won two of three games in their spring trip against a few of Colorado's toughest teams. Cali Castagnola scored the game-winner in a 14-13 victory over Kent Denver and Kerianne Hunt scored the golden goal in a 15-14 defeat of Air Academy, but Carondelet lost the final game 23-11 to Cherry Creek.

5. Kent Denver (Colo.), 5-1
The Sun Devils fell just short in a 14-13 loss to California powerhouse Carondelet, but Kent Denver remains in the hunt for a league championship. A big game against No. 1 Cherry Creek is right around the corner.

6. Monte Vista-Danville (Calif.), 8-1
The Mustangs remain in the thick of the title race and should be refreshed after a two-week layoff. Monte Vista has won five consecutive games after a 16-6 loss to Carondelet. A rematch against Amador Valley — which they beat 8-7 in overtime earlier this season — looms large.

7. St. Ignatius Prep (Calif.), 10-2
The Wildcats split a pair of games against two of Texas' strongest teams. St. Ignatius beat Cy-Fair, 13-7, to end the Iron Maidens' eight-game winning streak, but the Wildcats fell just short against St. John's, 16-13.

8. Air Academy (Colo.), 7-2
The Kadets' only losses came against two of the West Coast's toughest teams: Cherry Creek (Colo.) and Carondelet (Calif.). Air Academy had the final possession and a chance to tie the game against Carondelet but could not find the finishing touch in a 14-13 loss.

9. Lake Oswego (Ore.), 4-0
The Lakers get back to action after a two-week break. Lake Oswego's toughest test to date comes against undefeated, 8-0 West Linn (Ore.), which is followed by a game against 6-1 Oregon City (Ore.).

10. Bingham (Utah), 11-0
The Miners have out-scored their opponents by an average of 10 goals per game, but Bingham is going to be put to the test against rival Alta (Utah).
News and Notes

Carondelet (Calif.) won two of three games in Colorado against Kent Denver and Air Academy, but the flu bug bit the Cougars prior to the final game against Cherry Creek, a 23-11 loss. The team's top players — Kerianne Hunt and Erin Jeffery — saw limited action. They were also without starting goalie Katie Merritt, who made 16 saves against both Kent Denver and Air Academy. Coach Rick Jeffery didn't use the flu as an excuse for the loss to Cherry Creek, which he called the best team his team has faced this season. ... Regis Jesuit (Colo.) is also putting together another impressive season in The Centennial State. The Raiders picked up a big win last week, knocking off previously unbeaten Centaurus (Colo.), 12-11, in a non-league game. Kathryn Blumhardt led Regis Jesuit with six goals, while the Raiders' defense held Centaurus to less than 20 goals for just the second time this season. Emma Lazaroff (Duke) paced Centaurus with four goals. ... Menlo School (Calif.) also picked up an impressive non-conference victory over Poway (Calif.) last week. Michaela Michael (USC) led all scorers with nine goals, including the game-winner with nine seconds remaining. Michael also added two assists. "It was an intense finish to a dramatic second half," Menlo coach Jen Lee said on the team's website. After reeling off five consecutive games, Menlo is now 7-4 on the season. The Knights' four losses came against strong in-state foes: Carondelet, Amador Valley and Monte Vista-Danville.

Life would have been so much easier if Carondelet had remained healthy for the entire trip to Colorado. I have no doubt that a healthy Carondelet would have prevailed over Cherry Creek. Now we are stuck with Cherry Creek or Coronado as top dog, depending on the ranking you choose.

Lax Power has it this way in the West
1 Coronado 82.19 17 11- 1- 0 CA
2 La Costa Canyon 81.42 14 12- 1- 0 CA
3 Cherry Creek V1 81.20 27 10- 1- 0 CO
4 Bainbridge Island 79.90 2 5- 1- 1 WA
5 Carondelet 79.73 6 11- 2- 0 CA
