2011 Nor Cal WDNT Teams Announcement

Postby MDIALG » Fri May 06, 2011 1:43 pm

Burlingame, CA - NorCal team tryouts for the US Lacrosse Women’s Division National Tournament (WDNT) were held Sunday, May 1 at Burlingame High School, in Burlingame, CA. The USL Women’s National Tournament will be held over Memorial Day weekend at Stony Brook University (NY).

Players for the NorCal teams were selected from an intense tryout of the 66 candidates from 21 different HS Varsity programs who registered. (Many more were nominated.) The selected team rosters and alternates for Nor Cal WDNT Teams include players from 18 different high school programs, including two players from a high school that does not offer lacrosse! There are forty total players: 18 juniors, 19 sophomores and 3 frosh named to two teams (plus a junior and 3 sophomores who are waiting in the wings as alternates, should the occasion arise for them to make the trip to WDNT). The teams also include seven players who represented NorCal last year at the WDNT event held in Maryland.

The teams will be coached by NorCal high school coaches. NorCal 1 will be led by Jen Lee, Head Coach Menlo School, and Amy Harms, Head Coach St. Ignatius Prep. Dara Robbins, Head Coach St. Francis High School (Sacramento), and Mona Mesbahi, Head Coach Pioneer High School, will coach NorCal 2.

“Our teams comprise two strong rosters of players who will unquestionably perform well at WDNT in their respective divisions,” stated Coach Jen Lee. “They will rise to the occasion of each and every challenge they face in their opponents. This is the very first time our Northern CA Chapter of US Lacrosse has been granted a second team, and we are so excited to have the opportunity to bring more of our Northern CA players to this important event. Thanks to ALL head coaches of girls’ varsity programs in Northern California who helped to make this a reality.”

I find something very strange on this selection list - not one player from the top 3 EBAL teams - Carondelet, Foothill or Cal. Is that because no one from those 3 schools tried out for this? Obviously this was based on an individual player selection, and not based on team selection.....but those 3 teams have a number of good individual players on their squads.

But then again, similiar individual selection events like this have always had a "unique" selection process. I remember a couple years ago that Ana Cyr, one of the better players in recent years from the Bay Area, was not selected for All American from this area, when she was named #13 of the top 25 Western United States recruits by West Side Lax that year. http://www.westsidelax.com/WSL-Releases ... r-Rankings

These teams were selected from those who went to tryouts and the tryouts were mostly based on coaches' recommendations (invite only). It was not an open tryout and not everyone knew about it or were told late

I'm guessing those teams didn't send any players to the tryout because the NCS final is the same weekend as the WDNT and those teams are likely to make the final. It's been that way for a few years. It's a shame for the players from those teams but you have to appreciate their commitment to not abandon their teammates.

Lax...you're right. None of the Carondelet girls tried out because of NCS. That was the same for last year too! It is ashamed that NCS doesn't this in account when scheduling the finals . It is a missed opportunity for a lot of good players, now and in the future.

A few years back, Corso and Jeffries tried to get them to move it. I am pretty sure they had backing from all the coaches in this area, but they still didn't move it. EBAL being the strongest league around, you would think they'd have some pull. It is a little bit silly, yes...

Well there are some names that are glaring for their absence. If the purpose of WDNT is to get exposure to college coaches, those missing in action are fine without WDNT. From what I've heard Stanford has been checking out some girls absent from the WDNT roster for example. If they are kicking the tires then you can be sure other top D1 schools are too.

Then there is the simple fact that Rick and Scott are ultra competitive and can't stand losing to the other. Really think Rick sends 3 or 4 or 5 of his girls to WDNT just so he can lose to Scott? Laughable, especially since he knows the girls are fine without it.
